A student carried out a preparation to culture yeast cells on an agar plate using the following method:

  • Step 1: Heat the inoculating loop in a Bunsen burner flame until it is red hot.
  • Step 2: Allow the inoculating loop to cool down for 20 to 30 seconds.
  • Step 3: Dip the loop into the tube containing the liquid yeast suspension.
  • Step 4: Gently streak the loop across the surface of the nutrient agar.
  • Step 5: Secure the Petri dish lid with adhesive tape and incubate at 25degC.

Give one reason why Step 2 is necessary.
