Focus and Environment

The environment in which we study can play an important role in focus and cognitive performance. An educational psychologist conducted an experiment to investigate whether background music affects concentration. Ten students were randomly assigned to one of two conditions.

  • Condition A: Five participants completed a logic puzzle task while listening to soft classical music.
  • Condition B: Five different participants completed the exact same task while listening to upbeat pop music with lyrics.

The number of puzzles solved correctly within 10 minutes (maximum score of 20) was recorded. The data collected is presented in the table below:
