Question 52

Gym Etiquette Violation Study

Researchers investigated how social norms regarding hygiene and equipment care are enforced in public fitness environments. They aimed to observe how gym-goers react to a confederate violating a well-established social norm (failing to wipe down a machine after use) under different social and environmental conditions.

Two study locations were selected: MetroFit (a large, highly anonymous budget gym in a central city) and IronWorks Club (a smaller, highly integrated local powerlifting gym with strong community ties). The sessions occurred during peak workout hours.

Two independent variables were investigated:

  • Setting: MetroFit (high anonymity, large public mix) compared to IronWorks Club (high community cohesion, smaller dedicated membership).
  • Environmental Cues: Ordered (strictly enforced hygiene signs visible, spotless cleaning stations with fresh spray and towels) compared to Disordered (messy cleaning stations, empty spray bottles, and used paper towels left on benches).

In all sessions, a confederate completed a heavy set of bench presses, visibly leaving sweat on the bench, and then walked away to another area without wiping it down or returning the weights to the rack.

Observers recorded whether other gym-goers nearby:

  • gave a direct sanction (e.g., confronting the confederate directly and telling them to clean the bench)
  • intervened indirectly (e.g., reporting the behavior to staff or cleaning the bench themselves while glaring)
  • showed no reaction.

Table: Percentage of participant reactions by setting and cue conditions

  • MetroFit: Direct sanction = 5%, Indirect intervention = 10%, No reaction = 85%
  • IronWorks Club: Direct sanction = 25%, Indirect intervention = 30%, No reaction = 45%
  • Ordered Environment: Direct sanction = 18%, Indirect intervention = 22%, No reaction = 60%
  • Disordered Environment: Direct sanction = 2%, Indirect intervention = 4%, No reaction = 94%

Using research evidence, explain how far learning theories could account for the findings of this gym etiquette study.
