Question 2

Context: Dr. Kenji's Cross-Cultural Investigation of Anxiety

Dr. Kenji is a clinical psychologist. He conducted a study to investigate cultural variations in the presentation of somatic (physical) versus cognitive (psychological) symptoms of Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD).

Dr. Kenji utilized two main methods: a semi-structured clinical interview to obtain qualitative descriptions of patients' experiences, and a translated version of a standardized 10-point somatic symptom checklist to gather quantitative scores on physical symptoms (such as muscle tension and stomach upset).

His sample was composed of three groups:

  • Group A: Monolingual Japanese patients living in Tokyo (Dr. Kenji's native culture).
  • Group B: First-generation Japanese immigrants living in London.
  • Group C: White British patients living in London.

After analyzing the thematic and numerical data, Dr. Kenji found that physical somatic complaints were significantly higher and more frequently reported as primary anxiety indicators in Group A than in Group C, with Group B showing intermediate levels. He concluded that Western-designed diagnostic criteria (like the DSM-5) under-diagnose anxiety in East Asian cultures because they focus too heavily on cognitive worry rather than somatic discomfort.

Discuss Dr. Kenji's use of cross-cultural research to investigate the presentation of anxiety symptoms.

You must make reference to the context in your answer.
