A team of educational psychologists investigated the role of vicarious reinforcement in social learning. They studied whether watching an adult model receive praise for eco-friendly waste sorting increases the amount of recycling sorted by primary school children. One group of children watched a video of an adult model being praised and rewarded with a token for correctly sorting plastic and paper waste (the reinforced-model condition). The other group watched a video of an adult model sorting plastic and paper waste with no praise or reward given (the neutral-model condition). During a subsequent 10-minute individual activity, observers recorded the mass of waste (in grams) correctly sorted by each child.
