Study on Spatial Problem-Solving

A team of developmental psychologists investigated learning in young children. They selected 40 five-year-old children and randomly assigned them to two groups to complete a complex structural building task:

  • Group A: Children completed the task individually with no assistance.
  • Group B: Children completed the task with a teacher who offered verbal prompts, broke down the task into smaller steps, and gradually reduced assistance as the child became more capable.

Subsequently, all children were tested individually on a new, similar building task to measure their independent success. The findings showed that children in Group B were significantly quicker and more accurate when completing the second task independently than those in Group A.
