Study on Algorithmic Thinking in Early Childhood

A research team investigated cognitive development and problem-solving in early childhood. They recruited 50 six-year-old children and randomly allocated them to one of two conditions to learn basic programming logic using a puzzle-based app:

  • Group 1: Children interacted with the app completely independently, navigating the coding puzzles through individual trial-and-error with no external guidance.
  • Group 2: Children interacted with the app alongside an animated digital tutor. The tutor provided structured prompts, highlighted key logical pathways, simplified complex coding blocks into smaller choices, and systematically reduced this support as the child's performance improved.

One week later, all children were tested individually on a novel, more complex programming challenge without any assistance or tutor present. The researchers found that children from Group 2 completed the novel challenge significantly faster and with far fewer logical errors than those in Group 1.
