An investigation was set up to test the effectiveness of a new virtual reality (VR) spatial-navigation simulation program for improving the physical precision of junior microsurgeons. A small-scale pilot study was conducted before the main trial took place. This was used to check the reliability and suitability of a new 10-point Robotic Micro-Suturing Precision (RMSP) assessment designed to measure micro-spatial accuracy. Twelve junior neurosurgical residents of both sexes, aged 26–32, participated in the pilot study.
At the start of the study, a baseline precision score was obtained for each participant using the 10-point RMSP assessment. A higher score obtained indicated a greater level of micro-spatial precision. Participants were then instructed to complete a 15-minute VR simulation session at the start of every shift for 5 consecutive days. After this 5-day period, a second RMSP score was obtained for each participant using the same 10-point assessment.
