A researcher investigated the performance of two newly developed virtual keyboard layouts (Layout Alpha and Layout Beta) designed for smartwatches. Fifty computer science students from a single university department were selected via opportunity sampling to take part in a usability test.
In Group 1, 25 participants were asked to type a standard 100-word paragraph of technical text on Layout Alpha. In Group 2, 25 different participants were asked to type the same paragraph on Layout Beta.
The researcher predicted that the mean typing speed (measured in words per minute) would be significantly higher for Layout Alpha than for Layout Beta.
Briefly explain two ways in which the usability study described above could be improved.
