Question 278

Marine Reef Restoration Experiment

A marine biologist conducted a field experiment to test the efficacy of two active restoration techniques on bleached staghorn coral (Acropora cervicornis) fragments.

Sixty bleached coral fragments of similar size and initial health status were harvested from a single reef zone.

The 60 fragments were randomly allocated into three equal groups of 20:

  • Group 1 was inoculated with a novel consortium of beneficial probiotic bacteria.
  • Group 2 underwent micro-fragmentation followed by localized nutrient-gel enrichment.
  • Group 3 was returned to the reef habitat with no experimental treatment or manipulation.

After a 6-month period, the growth rates and zooxanthellae densities of all coral fragments were measured. Both Group 1 and Group 2 showed a highly significant increase in health metrics, whereas the coral fragments in Group 3 showed minimal recovery.

Question:

Explain the purpose of Group 3 in this scientific investigation.
