Acoustic Insulation Core Material Study

An acoustic engineer designed an experiment to evaluate the sound-dampening efficacy of three different structural insulation core materials.

A total of 24 identical soundproof test chambers were prepared. Each chamber was fitted with a wall panel utilizing one of the three core materials:

  • Group P used panels with a recycled cellulose core.
  • Group Q used panels with an aerated polymer foam core.
  • Group R used panels with a dense mineral wool core.

A constant external acoustic noise source of 95 decibels (dB) at a frequency of 1000 Hz was projected at the outer face of each panel for 10 minutes. The engineer measured the sound pressure level (in decibels) transmitted to the interior of each chamber.
