Question 254

Context: Early Years Care Study

An observational study was designed to compare the cooperative play behaviours of toddlers (aged 3) who attend professional day nurseries with those who are cared for full-time at home by grandparents.

The sample consisted of 80 toddlers, observed in a standardized playroom environment equipped with various sharing-based games and toys. Half of the toddlers regularly attended professional day nurseries (at least 30 hours a week), and the other half were cared for by grandparents.

Observers covertly coded the toddlers' behaviours over a 15-minute period using a structured coding scheme for cooperative actions (such as sharing toys, turn-taking, and comforting a peer). The researchers found that toddlers who attended professional day nurseries displayed significantly higher rates of cooperative behaviour and faster conflict-resolution skills than those cared for at home by grandparents.

Question:

Explain one or more possible implications of this study for the economy.
