Question 190

A researcher investigated the effects of social loafing on effort. The researcher used a repeated measures design.

In one condition (the 'individual' condition), participants were asked to clap as loudly as they could for 10 seconds while alone.

In a second condition (the 'group' condition), the same participants were asked to clap as loudly as they could for 10 seconds as part of a group of four people.

In both conditions, the sound level (in decibels) produced by each individual participant was measured.

Explain why the researcher thought it was important to use the same participants in each condition (a repeated measures design) in this study.
