Study Description

A researcher carried out a study based on Asch's social influence research to investigate whether the size of the majority affects conformity.

  • Small majority condition: There were 2 confederates who unanimously gave the wrong answer before the participant.
  • Large majority condition: There were 6 confederates who unanimously gave the wrong answer before the participant.

Participants were randomly allocated to take part in only one of the conditions. They were shown visual stimulus cards and asked to state which comparison line matched the standard line. The researcher recorded whether each participant did or did not conform to the incorrect majority's answer.
