Study on Social Anxiety Disorder

A psychologist conducted a study to investigate the effectiveness of two different psychological interventions for Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD).

Thirty-six participants, all diagnosed with SAD, took part in the study. Before the interventions began, the psychologist recorded the number of self-reported panic episodes each participant experienced over a one-week period.

The 36 participants were then randomly assigned to one of three groups of 12.

  • Group A completed an 8-week module of Systematic Desensitisation.
  • Group B completed an 8-week module of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT).
  • Group C did not receive any therapy during the 8-week period (waiting-list control).

At the end of the 8 weeks, the psychologist recorded the weekly number of panic episodes for each participant again. The results showed a significant decrease in panic episodes for Group A and Group B, while the frequency for Group C remained unchanged.
