A group of sports scientists want to investigate the effect of a high-protein recovery shake compared to a standard carbohydrate recovery drink on muscle soreness recovery.
Participants completed a high-intensity leg workout. They were then split into two groups. Group X drank the high-protein shake immediately post-workout, while Group Y drank the standard carbohydrate drink. After 24 hours, all participants completed a pressure-pain threshold test on their quadriceps, receiving a muscle soreness rating score out of 20 (where 20 was extremely sore and 0 was completely pain-free).
The experiment used an independent groups design.
Explain how this study could have been modified by using a matched pairs design.
