Each operator completes two simulated emergency trials in a counterbalanced order:

  • Trial Alpha: Completed after 24 hours of continuous wakefulness while inside a normobaric hypoxia chamber containing 14% oxygen (simulating an altitude of approximately 3,500 metres).
  • Trial Beta: Completed after a standard 8-hour sleep cycle while breathing normal room air (21% oxygen).
