A structured observation was designed to compare the peer interaction behaviours of Key Stage 2 pupils (aged 8–9) in a newly designed collaborative active-learning classroom versus a traditional desk-row classroom layout. The sample consisted of 80 pupils, who were observed individually. Half of the pupils were taught in the collaborative classroom and the other half in the traditional classroom.
Each target pupil was observed covertly for a continuous six-minute period while participating in a small-group science task. Two trained observers recorded the behaviours of each target pupil.
