Two sports psychology researchers investigated the effect of spectator proximity on aggressive behaviours in youth football matches. They observed the behaviour of Under-14 players in two different spectator setups and recorded their observations using a set of behavioural categories. They observed 40 players in the first spectator setup and another 40 players in the second spectator setup.
Spectator Setup 1 consisted of spectators standing directly along the touchline (within 1 metre of the play area).
Spectator Setup 2 consisted of spectators restricted to a designated viewing barrier 10 metres back from the touchline.
