The following passage was read to children aged five years and to children aged eleven years.
'Construction workers build houses and offices. Their job is to safely use tools and machines to create strong buildings. Here are some pictures of people. Which of these people do you think might be a construction worker? Is it the man or is it the woman, or could both of them be construction workers?'
The children were shown two pictures side-by-side, one of a male construction worker and one of a female construction worker. The response given by each child was recorded.
Each child was interviewed and questioned separately.
