Question 36

High-energy electrons are directed at a target of metal nuclei. As they pass close to the nuclei, they undergo diffraction. Which of the graphs below correctly shows how the scattering intensity III varies with the angle of deviation θ\thetaθ? Four graphs options labeled A, B, C, and D, plotting intensity I on the vertical axis against angle \theta on the horizontal axis. Graph A shows a very dominant central peak at \theta = 0 that decreases sharply. On each side of this central peak, there is a small bump representing a secondary maximum. The intensity does not drop to zero at the minimum between the central peak and the secondary bump, remaining well above the axis, and the baseline continues to decay at larger angles. Graph B shows a series of seven tall, thin, equally-spaced peaks of equal height, with the intensity dropping to zero between each peak. Graph C shows a tall, sharp central peak with three smaller, equally-spaced peaks of constant height on each side. The intensity drops completely to zero in the gaps between all peaks. Graph D shows a broad central peak that drops to zero intensity, followed on each side by secondary peaks of the same maximum height as the central peak.
