Question 7

Two particles A A\,A and B B\,B are moving on a smooth horizontal plane. The mass of A A\,A is kmkmkm, where 2<k<32 < k < 32<k<3, and the mass of B B\,B is mmm. The particles are moving along the same straight line, but in opposite directions, and they collide directly. Immediately before they collide the speed of A A\,A is 2u 2u\,2u and the speed of B B\,B is 4u4u4u. As a result of the collision the speed of A A\,A is halved and its direction of motion is reversed.

a.

Find, in terms of k k\,k and uuu, the speed of B B\,B immediately after the collision.

b.

State whether the direction of motion of B B\,B changes as a result of the collision, explaining your answer.

c.

Given that k=73\displaystyle k = \frac{7}{3}k=37, find, in terms of m m\,m and uuu, the magnitude of the impulse that A A\,A exerts on B B\,B in the collision.
