Question 5

A particle P P\,P of mass 0.3 kg is moving with speed u ms−1u \text{ ms}^{-1}u ms−1 in a straight line on a smooth horizontal table. The particle P P\,P collides directly with a particle Q Q\,Q of mass 0.6 kg, which is at rest on the table. Immediately after the particles collide, P P\,P has speed 2 m s-1 and Q Q\,Q has speed 5 m s-1. The direction of motion of P P\,P is reversed by the collision.

a.

Find the value of uuu.

[4]
b.

Find the magnitude of the impulse exerted by P P\,P on QQQ.

[2]
c.

Immediately after the collision, a constant force of magnitude R R\,R newtons is applied to Q Q\,Q in the direction directly opposite to the direction of motion of QQQ. As a result Q Q\,Q is brought to rest in 1.5 s. Find the value of RRR.
