Question 4

Evaluate, using evidence from the stimulus material, the extent to which the UK electric vehicle (EV) rapid-charging market can be considered to be an oligopoly.

According to an industry report by the energy regulator: "The leading rapid-charging networks have aggressively secured long-term exclusive contracts with major motorway service areas and prime retail hubs, effectively creating localized monopolies along key transport corridors. Rather than engaging in price competition on electricity tariffs, the major networks compete through non-price strategies, such as proprietary loyalty apps, premium lounge access, and ultra-high-speed plug-and-charge convenience. Smaller networks struggle to compete because upgrading grid connections to support multi-charger hubs requires massive upfront capital expenditure and long delays in grid integration from network operators."
