Sustainable Textiles Initiative

'Green September' is a growing global campaign that encourages consumers to choose sustainable wardrobe options. In September 2023, a record 450,000 shoppers signed up to the pledge to buy only organic or regenerative fabrics for the month. This included 140,000 in France, 90,000 in Italy, and 60,000 in Spain.

According to research from the Sustainable Fashion Trust, consumer willingness to try eco-friendly fabrics is rising. The proportion of consumers surveyed in Western Europe and North America who actively sought organic alternatives rose from 43% to 49% over a twelve-month period. Crucially, over 60% of those who purchased bamboo textiles reported that they now prefer them over synthetic alternatives for sports and lounge apparel.

Hbamboo-based fabric has been growing steadily and accounted for approximately 11% of the sustainable activewear category in 2022. While cotton and polyester sales are facing stagnation due to environmental concerns, bamboo fabric sales surged by 290% between 2021 and 2023. The performance benefits, such as natural moisture-wicking and antimicrobial properties, have made bamboo highly attractive to premium sportswear brands. The income elasticity of demand (YED) for premium bamboo apparel is estimated at +1.7. This has led primary producers and manufacturers to expand cultivation of raw bamboo, prompting international apparel brands to introduce specialized bamboo-linen blends.

Question

Using the case study, explain how the change in demand for bamboo fabric will affect the producer surplus of bamboo growers.
