Extract B: The consequences of rapidly falling solar PV technology costs

Cheap, highly efficient solar PV technology will have three primary consequences. First, it will accelerate the displacement of traditional base-load electricity plants, particularly coal and gas. As solar PV installations become highly cost-effective for both residential and commercial sectors, utility firms are increasingly halting or decommissioning fossil-fuel generation projects in favour of solar arrays.

Second, the crash in solar generation costs is driving rapid growth in complementary sectors. Residential battery storage systems, once considered a luxury, are seeing skyrocketing demand as consumers seek to store cheap daytime solar energy for evening use.

The third consequence is the pressure placed on the wider electricity grid infrastructure. Because solar energy is intermittent, grids must handle sudden influxes of solar-generated power during peak sunlight hours, followed by rapid drops in the evening. This creates a reliance on rapid-response gas 'peaker' plants or massive grid-scale battery arrays, complicating decarbonisation goals in regions lacking storage infrastructure if they cannot balance the load.
