Argentina's lithium rush facing hydrological and social hurdles

There was a time when investing in Argentine lithium extraction meant guaranteed success. After the mid-2010s, market-friendly reforms and soaring global demand for electric vehicle batteries meant multinational corporations were keen to exploit the vast brine reserves in the 'Lithium Triangle'. The existence of massive salt flats (salares) in Northwest provinces like Jujuy and Salta offered a highly lucrative environment, initially seen as more politically stable and accessible than neighboring Bolivia.

By 2024, however, global lithium carbonate prices stabilized after previous record highs, while local extraction costs began to climb. Argentine operations are facing logistical limits. After years of continuous pumping, lithium-rich brine must be extracted from much deeper beneath the salt flats. This requires advanced drilling rigs and larger evaporation ponds, which use more chemical reagents and diesel fuel. Specialized mining wages are high, and regional unions are increasingly assertive. A heavy-machinery operator in Jujuy can earn up to $65,000 a year, far exceeding average regional incomes and creating local wage inflation.

Energy supply is another major challenge. The high-altitude salares are remote, lacking connection to the national grid. Mines must rely on transported diesel fuel and localized solar-diesel hybrid microgrids. Energy and logistics now make up approximately 16% of total operational costs.

Water depletion has emerged as the most critical threat. Extracting lithium via brine evaporation requires pumping millions of liters of saline water per day, which hydrologists warn draws down the surrounding freshwater table. Local pastoralists and indigenous agricultural firms accuse the lithium companies of drying up the fragile high-altitude wetlands (vegas) relied upon for llama grazing and subsistence farming. In response to environmental degradation, local communities have blockaded transport routes.

As a consequence of organized local resistance, regional courts and provincial authorities have tightened environmental regulations. In 2012, getting an environmental impact assessment (EIA) approved for a new extraction project took an average of 180 days. By 2024, due to mandatory indigenous consultations and stricter water-monitoring compliance, this timeline had bloated to 450 days.
