Extract A: Consumer Behaviour in the Sustainable Refill Subscription Market

Over the past three years, eco-friendly household subscription brands have integrated advanced choice architecture to lock in consumer spending. Platforms such as EcoScrub, GreenSprout, and CleanCycle rely heavily on behavioural nudges to guide purchasing patterns. EcoScrub's "gamified eco-milestones"—which award virtual badges like 'Forest Protector'—and GreenSprout's auto-ship defaults have been analyzed by behavioural economists. They argue these features trigger psychological commitments, causing subscribers to continue ordering plastic-free refills even when their cupboards are already overflowing with unused cleaning concentrates.

Additionally, the widespread industry tactic of offering a "30-day trial starter kit" requires consumers to input credit card details upfront. This structure exploits consumer inertia and the default effect, transforming forgetful trialists into automatic paying subscribers on a £24.99 monthly cycle. Exploiting these cognitive shortcuts, EcoScrub expanded its subscriber base rapidly, growing its annual revenues from £280 million in 2021 to over £420 million in 2022.

However, data from 2024 reveals a shift. As consumers face pressure from persistent inflation and high energy bills, they are actively pruning non-essential recurring payments. EcoScrub reported a loss of 80,000 active subscribers in the first quarter of 2024, with a further 320,000 projected to cancel before autumn. Departing customers cited an accumulation of unused refill boxes, a lack of clear utility, and poor perceived value for money as their primary motivators.

Conversely, competitor brand PureNature has maintained high customer loyalty by introducing fully flexible, pay-as-you-go pricing and transparent, customizable delivery frequencies. Projected annual subscriber loss for PureNature dropped to a record low of 1.8%, as utility-maximizing consumers reallocated their household budgets to platforms that offer greater control and better utility per pound spent.

With reference to the information provided in Extract A, assess whether subscribers to sustainable cleaning subscription services like EcoScrub behave rationally.
