Study the figure showing a managed stretch of coastline.

An aerial satellite view of a straight shoreline running west to east. Wooden groynes are positioned perpendicular to the shoreline, extending out into the sea. There is a distinct, wide build-up of golden sand on the western (left) side of every groyne, while the eastern (right) side of each groyne shows a significantly narrower beach with less sand.

State the direction of longshore drift shown in the figure and give one reason for your answer.
