Question 7

When the square’s winter lights go out

Source A: an original imagined letter from a resident about seasonal lights in a town square.

I would like the lights to stay on later on Fridays. When I finish work, the shops are often closing and the square seems to be preparing for everyone to leave. During the lighting display, I can arrive after my working day and feel that the evening still contains a small occasion.

I am not asking for the display to run all night. People live above the square, and I do not assume that what looks festive to me is equally welcome through somebody’s window. But a season described as being for the whole town should include people who cannot visit in the early evening.

Publish the hours and consider one later night. Then those of us who travel to see the lights can plan, and residents will know when the display is meant to end. A limited extension could make the invitation broader without turning every night into a celebration nobody can decline.

Source B: an original imagined notice from the organisers of the invented display.

WINTER LIGHTS: PROPOSED HOURS

DaysDisplay times
Monday to Thursday5 pm to 8 pm
Friday and Saturday5 pm to 9 pm
Sunday5 pm to 7 pm

These are proposed times for a four-week display. We invite comments before confirming them.

We have included later weekend evenings because not everyone can visit after school or early in the day. We have also set finishing times because this is a residential square as well as a place for visitors.

Comments should say which proposed arrangement affects you and why. We cannot promise to accept every request or leave the display on whenever someone arrives. Our aim is a published schedule which visitors can plan around and which gives people living nearby a dependable end to the evening’s display.

Compare how Sources A and B suggest the winter-light display could meet the needs of visitors and residents.
