Question 16

Art which does not begin with looking

Original practice source: a commentary about experiencing art.

We often ask what an artwork looks like before asking what else it might do. A pattern of sounds, a sequence of spoken words or the relationship between movements can offer an experience which a photograph cannot contain. An attractive image may introduce a work without representing the whole encounter.

That does not make looking a lesser activity. A careful arrangement of colour or shape may reward attention without any additional event. The useful question is which kind of encounter a work invites, and whether its presentation makes that invitation understandable rather than assuming every visitor will approach through the same sense or habit.

An arts magazine is inviting articles on the statement: “We pay too much attention to what art looks like.”

Write an article for the magazine arguing your view. You may use ideas from the source and your own ideas.
