Having time and being free to use it
Original practice source: a commentary about free time.
An unfilled hour may look like a possession available for any purpose. In practice, a person may be waiting for a task, travelling between obligations or unable to leave a responsibility unattended. The visible gap does not explain all the choices inside it.
Time can also be used without producing a result someone else can recognise. Rest, thought or an unplanned conversation need not justify themselves as preparation for greater productivity. A useful account of free time considers both the freedom to choose and the value of what people choose, rather than only the number of empty squares in a diary.
A national newspaper is running an essay competition on the statement: “Having plenty of free time is the greatest luxury.”
Write an essay for the competition arguing your view. You may use ideas from the source and your own ideas.
