Question 5

Books and the age printed beside them

Original practice source: a commentary about reading across age categories.

An age description can help a reader find a suitable starting point. It may indicate an intended audience or the kind of presentation being offered. Such information can be useful without becoming a judgement about every person who later opens the book.

A work written for younger readers may reward an older reader through precision, humour or a perspective they had forgotten to consider. Enjoyment need not prove that the original audience was a mistake. The difficulty begins when a useful guide becomes a rule about who is allowed to take the work seriously.

A reading magazine is inviting articles on the statement: “Adults should leave books written for children to children.”

Write an article for the magazine arguing your view. You may use ideas from the source and your own ideas.
