Question 4

Participation is not always a button

Original practice source: a commentary about interactive cultural experiences.

Being invited to choose, move or contribute can change a visitor’s relationship with a work. Instead of receiving a finished arrangement, the person helps determine what happens next. That possibility can create curiosity and a sense of responsibility.

Participation is not limited to visible action. Listening closely or following a difficult sequence may involve considerable attention, while pressing a button can become an activity with little effect on understanding. An invitation to interact needs a purpose. It should also leave room for someone who wants to observe before deciding whether to contribute.

An arts magazine is inviting articles on the statement: “Every cultural experience should be interactive.”

Write an article for the magazine arguing your view. You may use ideas from the source and your own ideas.
