A place without a required activity
Original practice source: a commentary about public spaces.
An empty period in a public place can look suspiciously unproductive. A person sits without buying, exercising or waiting for an organised event. Yet that pause may be the part of a day which allows them to remain in the town at all. A place can be useful without issuing everyone a task.
Other people also need to use the space. A quiet pause beside a route is different from blocking it, and a welcome cannot mean that one person’s comfort settles every arrangement. The challenge is to make room for ordinary presence while keeping the place workable for people whose purposes differ.
A magazine about town life is inviting articles on the statement: “Public spaces should give people more opportunities to do nothing.”
Write an article for the magazine arguing your view. You may use ideas from the source and your own ideas.
