Question 6

The conversation a visitor cannot demand

Original practice source: a commentary about meeting people while travelling.

An unplanned conversation can change a visit. A place described through attractions may become a place in which somebody has an ordinary day, a preference or a question of their own. Listening can interrupt the visitor’s ready-made account.

People living or working there are not part of an unpaid explanation service. A short reply may reflect a task to finish rather than an unwillingness to welcome anyone. A traveller can be curious without assuming that curiosity creates a right to another person’s time. The most useful encounter may begin with attention to whether a conversation is actually being offered.

A travel magazine is inviting articles on the statement: “Talking to people matters more than seeing attractions when visiting a place.”

Write an article for the magazine arguing your view. You may use ideas from the source and your own ideas.
