Agreement before a shared decision
Original practice source: a commentary about group decisions.
Full agreement can make a shared plan easier to support. People understand why the arrangement was chosen and do not feel that a confident group simply moved past their concerns. The discussion may improve the proposal itself.
Requiring agreement from everybody can also prevent any workable choice from being made. A preference, a serious practical barrier and a request to control another person’s choice are not necessarily the same kind of objection. A useful process explains what is open to decision, how concerns will be considered and what commitments each person is actually being asked to accept.
A national newspaper is running an essay competition on the statement: “A group should make a decision only when everyone agrees.”
Write an essay for the competition arguing your view. You may use ideas from the source and your own ideas.
