MediumHard

Question 1

Read the final section of Robert Frost's prescribed anthology poem ‘Out, Out–’, beginning “The boy's first outcry was a rueful laugh” and ending “turned to their affairs”.

The prescribed text is available in the official Pearson anthology (printed page 26).

Explore how Frost presents the boy's final moments and what happens afterwards in the final section of ‘Out, Out–’.

To organise your response:

  • explain how “rueful laugh” and “The life from spilling” present the boy's immediate response
  • explain how the punctuation and sequence in “Little—less—nothing!” present his death
  • explore the change of focus in the final two lines and its effect on the reader

Support your answer with close reference to this section, including brief quotations.
