Question 13

The last harbour check

I had been ready to leave since the harbour lights came on, and each new check by the skipper seemed to me another needless delay. She retied one case, counted the lifejackets and tested the radio while I stared towards the open water. Then I noticed that she checked her own equipment last. The care I had dismissed as fussiness was for everyone else's sake, and I felt embarrassed by my impatience. I had imagined this departure for years, so the dark line of sea beyond the harbour wall still filled me with excitement. Yet, when I saw my brother waiting alone on the quay, I suddenly wanted the boat to remain where it was for a few more minutes.

In your own words, explain how the writer's thoughts and feelings change while waiting to leave the harbour.
