The unsigned poems
Every competition entry carried a number instead of a writer's name. The judge was impartial, applying the same criteria whether a poem seemed polished or unfinished. She was also receptive to unfamiliar forms; an unexpected rhythm was a reason to read again, not to set an entry aside. When a line puzzled her, she marked it lightly and returned to it after reading the whole poem. Some meanings emerged slowly, and she allowed them time rather than forcing an immediate judgement.
From the passage, select two words or phrases that show the judge's approach to assessing the entries.
