Question 110

The notes for the community meeting were spread across the kitchen table. I had read them so many times that the opening sounded memorised, but the questions at the end still seemed to belong to someone braver. At the hall, I watched the chairs fill and folded my first page until its corners softened. Then a woman near the front asked about a detail I had checked twice. I found it in my notes and answered without looking down. When the next question came, I left the pages on the table and listened.

From the passage, select two words or phrases that show how the narrator’s confidence changes from the beginning of the passage to the end.
