Question 84

Packing the loan collection

We were preparing several ceramics for transport to another museum. When the packing materials arrived, we found that the foam inserts were too shallow to protect the taller pieces. Two identification labels had come away from their objects, leaving us uncertain about which records belonged with them. Partway through weighing the collection, the battery in the electronic scales failed. Drilling in the adjoining room made the conservator’s instructions impossible to hear. Finally, the largest sealed crate would not fit inside the goods lift, so we could not take it down to the loading area.

Describe the difficulties encountered while preparing the ceramics for transport. You may support your points with brief quotations.
