Question 66

The paper roll

The captioner sat at a small desk beside the lecture hall. Her eyes stayed on the speaker, although her hands moved across a keyboard unlike mine. A paper roll curled into a basket at her feet. On the screen above us, the words appeared almost as soon as they were spoken. The machine's clicks were faint and regular. When a joke made everyone laugh, she kept working; the people reading the screen deserved to know what had caused it.

From the passage, select two words or phrases that describe the sound made by the machine.
