Question 89

The short length

The weaver passed me a strip of cloth from the end of the loom. It was coarse against my palm and stiff enough to remain upright when I held one edge. The scarf beside it looked softer, though both had been made with the same yarn. She showed me the difference between their patterns without asking me to remember the names. Feeling the samples gave meaning to a diagram that had looked like a grid of identical squares.

From the passage, select two words or phrases that describe how the sample cloth felt and behaved.
