Question 88

The weighing table

The market hall was crowded by eleven. It was noisy, too: customers asked questions across the counters while a trolley rattled over the tiles. I watched a cheesemonger cut a wedge, weigh it and remove a sliver before wrapping it in paper. The customer wanted a smaller piece, and the adjustment was made without an argument. Outside, a queue formed at the bread stall. My shopping list was short, but nothing about the room encouraged a quick visit.

From the passage, select two words or phrases that describe the atmosphere in the market hall.
