Question 35

We played with those

Original opinion extract, written for practice.

Whenever a familiar toy disappears from sale, somebody says we played with those and survived. We did. The people who did not are inconveniently absent from the conversation. That does not establish that every new restriction is sensible, or that children should grow up inside a padded cupboard. It establishes only that our own survival is a very small investigation. I remember the pleasure of the toy, and I would like today’s children to have pleasures worth remembering too. Show me what the concern is, how serious it appears and whether a better design could preserve the fun. Nostalgia is a warm place from which to begin a question. It is a poor place from which to announce that the question has already been answered.

Use your own words to evaluate the writer’s attitude to judging old toys through nostalgia. Give details from the extract to justify your answer.
