Question 33

The joke after the explanation

Original opinion extract, written for practice.

I told the story because it was funny. My colleague had sent the presentation to the wrong room, and for ten minutes a group expecting an account of roof repairs received our proposal for a summer exhibition. Everybody laughed when I described it at lunch. Later she said she would rather I stopped retelling it. I explained that nobody thought less of her; we all make mistakes, and being able to laugh is healthy. She did not seem reassured. I suppose it is possible that a story changes when you are the only person in it who cannot leave the joke behind. Still, I wish she had told me before everyone began enjoying it. It is awkward to withdraw something which has become part of the office’s shared happiness.

Use your own words to evaluate the writer’s attitude to telling jokes about another person’s mistake. Give details from the extract to justify your answer.
