The free place at six o’clock
Original opinion extract, written for practice.
The poster says the evening workshop is free, and the organisers deserve thanks for removing the ticket price. Now consider the person who finishes work across town at half past five, needs two buses and must arrange someone to collect a child. No money changes hands at the workshop door. That is a precise fact and an incomplete invitation. I am not asking a small club to solve every difficulty in a city. I am asking it to distinguish charging nothing from requiring nothing. Tell us when the session ends, what must be brought and whether another time is possible. An honest account of the remaining demands will help more than printing FREE in a larger font and treating everyone still absent as mysteriously uninterested.
Use your own words to evaluate the writer’s attitude to calling an event free. Give details from the extract to justify your answer.
