Who deserves a first rehearsal?
Original opinion extract, written for practice.
We cannot keep opening the club to anybody who fancies a taster. Serious members have worked for years, and every new arrival expects a smile, an explanation and several mistakes before lunch. There is an audition for a reason. I do not mind helping someone who has earned a place; I resent being asked to turn our rehearsal into a public invitation. The organiser says a free introductory session might reveal talent we have missed. Perhaps. It might also reveal that people enjoy trying something without being prepared to work. I came here to improve alongside committed performers, not to spend the afternoon proving that everyone is welcome. Anyone who really wants this badly enough will find a way in. We all did.
