Question 30

A perfectly organised holiday

Original opinion extract, written for practice.

I planned the holiday so that nobody would have to make a decision. Breakfast, walk, lunch and museum were printed in four colours, with a small star beside the experiences people were certain to enjoy. By Tuesday my brother wanted an afternoon without stars. He said he might sit on the balcony and see what happened. Nothing would happen; that was precisely the problem my plan had solved. I offered him two alternative activities, which he ungratefully declined. It is difficult arranging pleasure for people who insist on interfering with its delivery. I have now left Wednesday afternoon blank, although I shall put a few suggestions in the margin. Freedom is important to my family, and I intend to make sure they use it properly.

Use your own words to evaluate the writer’s attitude to planning a holiday for other people. Give details from the extract to justify your answer.
